The magnificent Shwedagon pagoda is the most well known monument in Yangon. The towering, 99 meter tall gold plated pagoda in the center of Yangon, with its diamond studded spire, dominates the area and is visible from much of the city. When it is dark, the pagoda is illuminated by spotlights, creating a mysterious ambiance. The pagoda is said to be the oldest in Burma and is more than 2,500 years old, dating back to the Buddha's lifetime.
The complex has four entrances, and all of them all but the eastern one have an elevator or an escalator. All are protected by huge Chinthes, mythical lions from Burma with a white body and a golden head. The Jataka tales stories about the Buddha's earlier lives are depicted in lovely Burmese style on the upper portions of the walls near the complex's entrances.
