Coughing clears irritants from your breathing passages
The respiratory tract have different defense in order to get rid of particles that accidentally enter the air passages. One of these defense is coughing. Coughing expectorates foreign bodies and mucus out of the system.

Mucus
We have some mucus which traps and kills bacteria so that it will not enter the lower respiratory system. Mucus are present in the Nose, trachea bronchi.
The presence of Cilia
We have cilia present in trachea and in the lower respiratory tract. It function as a sweep, by sweeping the germs and pathogen out of the lower respiratory tract. This is the main reason why if we have some mucus builds up in the lower respiratory system, it will be expectorated by coughing.
Coughing
Expectorates foreign bodies and mucus out of the system.
Alveolar macrophages
They serve as army that defend the alveoli to be free from pathogens.
Note:
Depending on the severity of the case, the respiratory system migh collapse if no treatment is administer.
