Filtration is a way to separate a solid that doesn't dissolve in water from a liquid. When sand and water are mixed together are filtered:

• The sand stays in the paper filter (it becomes the residue)
• the water goes through the filter paper (it becomes the filtrate)
• Evaporation is a way to separate solids from liquids.

For example, copper sulfate crystals dissolve in water to make a copper sulfate solution. During evaporation, the water leaves, leaving behind solid crystals of copper sulfate.

One way to separate the solvent from a solution is through simple distillation. Distillation is a simple way to separate water from a salt solution. This method works because the boiling point of water is much lower than that of salt. If you heat the solution, the water will evaporate. It is then put in a separate container to cool and condense. Since the salt doesn't evaporate, it stays where it is.

With fractional distillation, a liquid can be separated from a mixture of two or more liquids. For example, fractional distillation can be used to separate liquid ethanol from a mix of ethanol and water. This method works because the boiling points of the liquids in the mix are not the same. One liquid evaporates before the other when the mixture is heated.

Paper chromatography is a way to separate substances that are dissolved in water from each other. It is often used to dissolve colored substances, like inks, food dyes, and plant dyes. It works because some of the colored substances dissolve better in the solvent than others, so they move further up the paper.
