Coughing clears irritants from your breathing passagesThe respiratory tract have different defense in order to get rid of particles that accidentally enter the air passages. One of these defense is coughing. Coughing expectorates foreign bodies and mucus out of the system.
Respiratory system Defense mechanism
Mucus
We have some mucus which traps and kills bacteria so that it will not enter the lower respiratory system. Mucus are present in the Nose, trachea bronchi.
The presence of Cilia
We have cilia present in trachea and in the lower respiratory tract. It function as a sweep, by sweeping the germs and pathogen out of the lower respiratory tract. This is the main reason why if we have some mucus builds up in the lower respiratory system, it will be expectorated by coughing.
Coughing
