Heterogeneous mixtures contain at least two ingredients or phases, it can be more than two. The materials and phases can be two solids, two liquids (emulsions), or two gases. It can also be a mixture of solid and liquid (suspension), gas and liquid (aerosol), or gas and solid (smoke).
Two different substances mix, but physically they remain separate. One substance with another substance still maintains its respective chemical identities and does not change.
If we sample from a small part of the mixture, the composition may be different from the sample we take from another part. So, in a mixture, the composition of one part with another part can be different.
Heterogeneous mixtures can usually be separated again. For example, in a mixture of water and sand, the water and sand can be separated if the sand has formed a precipitate.
