EARTHQUAKES AND FAULTS

Answer:

  1. EARTHQUAKE. A sudden slip on a fault causes an earthquake.
  2. SHEAR. A shear stress happens when two plates rub  against each other as they move in  opposite directions.
  3. REVERSE. Reverse fault is a fault in which the  upper block, above the fault plane,  moves up and over the lower block.
  4. TENSION. Tension forces the rocks to pull apart.
  5. NORMAL. Normal fault is a fault in which  the block above the fault has  moved downward relative to the  block below.
  6. COMPRESSION. Compression stress causes the rocks to push or squeeze  against one another.
  7. FAULTS. A fault is a fracture or zone of  fractures between two blocks of rock.
  8. STRIKESLIP. A strike-slip fault is a fault on which the two blocks  slide past one another.
  9. FRICTION. A friction is a force between the two sides of a fault  that keeps it from moving.
  10. CONFINING. Confining stress occurs when stress is applied to all sides of the crust.
